Dolley Madison Birthplace
Guilford County, North Carolina

When her husband was elected president in 1808, Dolley Madison created the role of First Lady as official White House hostess and national trend-setter. Restoration of the Christian Isley house, the birthplace of Dolley Madison, involved disassembling and relocating the abandoned 1768 one and a half story log house to a site adjoining the Greensboro Historical Society Museum.  The majority of the logs were retained, including the chestnut mantle timber, although almost half of the sand stone of the chimney had to be replaced with matching local stone.
